SUMMARY:Raíces Negras Trio - Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage Series
DESCRIPTION:RSVP\nMembers of the Raíces Negras chamber music collective celebrate innovative and prominent American women composers of the 20th and 21st centuries. Spotlighting the flute\, cello\, and piano\, each work explores an element of nature and the spirits that dwell within\, ranging from the Negro spirituals in Undine Smith Moore’s “Afro-American Suite\,” the motions and gestures of the beach in Tania León’s “Sands of Time\,” a day in the life of the Papua New Guinean rainforest in Elisenda Fábregas’s “Voices of the Rainforest\,” or the avant-garde timbral illusions and mythical imagery of Clarice Assad’s world-premiere commission entitled “Flight of the Fairies.” Within these musical works\, audiences will discover and enjoy the worldly and otherworldly soundscapes these composers can elicit.

SUMMARY:Levine Presents | Brazilian Choro: The Musical World of Pixinguinha
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\nExplore the imaginative and intriguing melodies of Brazilian choro with an evening celebrating the genre’s most influential composer\, Alfredo da Rocha Viana Filho\, also known as Pixinguinha. Alongside a remarkable guest ensemble\, faculty member Ceylon Mitchell guides us through this Afro-Brazilian genre as we sample some of the most famous choros composed by Pixinguinha and his contemporaries. \nLocation: Levine Music DC Campus: NW + Online\nFree for Levine Students \nAbout Brazilian Choro\nChoro emerged as a distinct musical genre around the middle of the 19th Century in Rio de Janeiro as a blend of Afrodiasporic and European musical styles in newly independent Brazil. Syncopated rhythms from Africa and popular dance forms from Europe (the polka\, habanera\, and more) melded together to create a unique new style\, which often gives the lead and highly ornamented melody to the flute\, harmonically supported by guitar and cavaquinho. Percussive accompaniment often comes from the pandeiro\, a Brazilian frame drum similar to a tambourine. Though choros are frequently instrumental and improvisatory\, they do feature lyrics from time to time. \n\nCeylon Mitchell\, flute\nSeth Kibel\, sax\nPablo Regis de Oliveira\, cavaquinho\nFelipe Garibaldi\, guitar\nLucas Ashby\, percussion\nAndré Coelho\, percussion

SUMMARY:Arts Club of Washington: Cuban Classical
DESCRIPTION:Dedicated to Dr. Ceylon Mitchell in March 2023\, Cuban composer Leo Brouwer’s “El cazador de historias” (The Hunter of Stories) comes literally from the posthumous book of the same name by Eduardo Galeano (Uruguayan journalist and writer)\, one of the most eminent thinkers of the last fifty years. Featuring controlled indeterminacy\, extended techniques\, and virtuosity from Brouwer’s avant-garde style of composition\, this new work for flute\, cello\, and piano represents an eclectic sound universe connected to ancient and modern Latin American literature and culture. Paquito D’Rivera’s Invitación al Danzón\, originally written for clarinet trio\, pays homage to the national dance of Cuba\, the guajira country song\, and the strong influence of jazz upon D’Rivera’s compositional style.

SUMMARY:Opening Performance: National Arts Marketing Project Conference 2021
DESCRIPTION:Flutist Ceylon Mitchell and friends present works honoring the musical heritage of Cuba and Brazil. Brazilian choro is a musical genre with roots in African syncopated rhythms and European dance forms\, including the lundú\, the polka\, and the habanera\, creating a very unique style. The improvisatory nature of choro mirrors that of North American jazz and virtuosity is a hallmark of the style. The Cuban flute tradition represents dance music at the heart of Cuban national and cultural identity with flute\, piano\, strings\, and Cuban percussion as the core ensemble. Starting with the danzón and extending to other genres like the cha cha cha\, mambo\, and salsa\, its elements include centuries-old European court dances\, rhythmic complexity based on the clave pattern from the African Congo Basin\, and a flute ornamentation style similar to the late-Baroque and early-Classical flute traditions. \nCeylon will also participate in a brief conversation about his work and talk a little about how the pandemic has changed or charged his practice as an artist and as a marketer.

SUMMARY:Choro Lecture Series: Pixinguinha and Black Contributions to Choro

Pixinguinha’s compositions and playing style are by far the most popular and have a heavy influence to this day. Ceylon will demonstrate Pixinguinha’s compositional innovations\, such as his use of counterpoint melody. \nThis is a free\, in-person\, and socially distanced event that will later be posted to EducArte’s YouTube page.

SUMMARY:Strathmore Artist in Residence Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join contemporary classical flutist Ceylon Mitchell to explore the percussion section instruments and the composite rhythmic elements that form the groove accompaniment in Cuban and Brazilian music\, born from the rich amalgamation of Spanish/Portuguese folk music formulas and African rhythms. \nThis workshop will include live and recorded musical examples that pay homage to famous influential Cuban flutists including Eduardo “Richard” Egues and Orlando “Maraca” Valle\, as well as Afro-Brazilian\, Pixinguinha. \nTry your hand at maintaining ostinato rhythms on percussive instruments like the clave\, güiro\, and congas while the main lead instruments like flute and piano improvise over these grooves. \nOlder students with instrument experience will gather and trade measures of improvisations\, incorporate common rhythmic fragments\, motives\, and melodic riffs\, and eventually venture into free improvisation.
